The Cricketer rates the individual performances of both sets of players after Australia and West Indies met in a thrilling clash at Trent Bridge
David Warner (3): Cheap dismissal as West Indies romped through the Australia top order with the short stuff. 3
Aaron Finch (6): Nicked off to an excellent Thomas delivery which darted across the left-hander. One terrific catch in the field. 4
Usman Khawaja (13): Perhaps softened up by the short-pitched barrage, got himself out swinging wildly outside off stump away from his body. 3
Steve Smith (73): Calmed nerves, steered the innings to respectability and then past it. Only out to a stunning catch on the boundary. 8
Glenn Maxwell (0 & 0-31): Took an outrageous and out-of-control swipe second ball and spooned a catch to Hope behind the stumps. Not clever. An excellent catch removed Russell. 3.5
Marcus Stoinis (19 & 0-18): Helped Smith stabilise the Australian effort but could not go on to make a sizeable contribution. 5
Alex Carey (45): Important knock from the wicketkeeper, who was calm at the crease when the situation demanded it. 6.5
Nathan Coulter-Nile (0-70 & 92): No man has scored more runs from No.8-11 in World Cup matches. Only one man has managed more in all ODIs. Astonishing hitting. Left a little to be desired with ball in hand. 8.5
Pat Cummins (2 & 2-41): Fast, disciplined and hard to get away, as 10 overs for 41 shows in technicolour. 7.5
Mitchell Starc (8 & 5-46): A crucial burst with the ball got rid of Brathwaite and, most importantly, Holder when things were starting to look bleak. 9
Adam Zampa (0* & 1-58): Made a big breakthrough in getting rid of Pooran but otherwise flattered to deceive with a combination of excellent wrong'uns and some rank long-hops. 6

Jason Holder could not lead his team to victory
Chris Gayle (21): Failed to settle, survived the ball hitting his off stump and a dreadful lbw decision before going leg-before to Starc. 4
Evin Lewis (1): A loose shot early on only succeeded in steering a catch to second slip. 3
Shai Hope (68): The hinge of the chase. Batted elegantly, and seemed to be timing the innings to precision before his demise. To blame for the run out of Hetmyer. Kept with assuredness. 7.5
Nicholas Pooran (40): Helped Hope give the Windies innings legs with a classy contribution, ended by an excellent Finch catch. 6.5
Shimron Hetmyer (21): Had got himself a start when he was cruelly run out, sold down the river by a dud call from Hope. 6
Jason Holder (50 & 1-28): Aggressive and economical with the ball. Almost led his team home with the bat. 8
Andre Russell (15 & 2-41): Excellent in his early overs, fast and dangerous, but struggled when his knee started flaring up. Unnecessary shot led to his dismissal. 6
Carlos Brathwaite (16 & 3-67): Cleared up the tail, including the destructive Coulter-Nile, but had come in for treatment earlier in the innings. 6
Ashley Nurse (19* & 0-31): Five overs of harmless off spin. 5
Sheldon Cottrell (1 & 2-56): A sensational boundary grab plus a ferocious start with the new ball added up to a good day’s work. 7.5
Oshane Thomas (0* & 2-63): Swatted Australia’s top order aside, only to find life a lot tougher against Smith and Coulter-Nile. 7
