Fran Wilson's England career was a slow burner and came to an end with her international retirement in the winter of 2021, ahead of the Women's Ashes, following a frustrating summer during which she was often included in international squads but rarely played.
First selected in an ECB Development side during the Women's European Championship now a decade ago, a pair of half centuries against Scotland and Netherlands earned the diminutive right-hander an opportunity as England faced Sri Lanka later in the year, before consecutive ducks against Australia saw her dropped from the side.
She would only return in 2014 for the World T20, albeit without making the playing side.
As time went on, however, she became a more regular part of the national reckoning; she left Somerset for Division One cricket at Middlesex and featured frequently in both limited-over formats.
Her ability to score quickly and in unusual areas saw her slot into the finisher's role in the middle order but that came with its own challenges; there are few positions more volatile. As England developed bigger hitters lower in the order, Wilson sometimes found herself surplus to requirements.
She remains a fine player, though: only five players scored more runs than Wilson in the final edition of the Kia Super League, while a remarkable catch against West Indies at Chelmsford thrust her name – and her athleticism in the field – firmly into the public eye.
She represented Sunrisers in the first two seasons of the regional restructure, before moving to join Western Storm, for whom she played in the KSL, on a regional contract.
