What’s the match?

Mumbai Indians take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ninth match of the 2021 IPL.

When is it taking place?

The game is scheduled for 7.30pm IST (3pm BST) on Saturday, April 17, 2021.

Where is the match being played?

Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium will stage the game.

Who’s got the form?

Mumbai started the tournament with a defeat, losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore off the final ball. However, they bounced back against Kolkata Knight Riders, comfortably securing a 10-run victory thanks to impressive bowling performances from Rahul Chahar and Trent Boult. The spinner took four for 27, dismissing KKR’s entire top order while Boult took two wickets for the loss of four runs in the final over. Rohit Sharma (43) and Suryakumar Yadav (56) starred with the bat.

Sunrisers, meanwhile, have lost their opening two fixtures, losing by 10 runs to KKR before suffering a six-run defeat at the hands of RCB. Winning the toss and electing to field clearly isn’t working for David Warner’s side while Wriddhiman Saha is struggling as an opener, scoring just eight runs.

What are the odds?

Dafabet have Mumbai Indians as the favourites at 8/13, while Sunrisers are available at 5/4 for the win.

Mumbai are favourites to hit the most sixes, with odds of 4/6, while the bookies are also backing Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock to have the higher opening stand, offering odds of 3/4 compared with odds of 11/10 for Warner and partner.

Sharma is at 12/5 to be high side’s leading run-scorer while Warner is 23/10 to top score for Sunrisers.

Who are the ones to watch?

Suryakumar Yadav is playing himself into a big knock. He started IPL 2021 with 31 runs from 23 deliveries against RCB before scoring 56 (36 balls) – including seven fours and two sixes – at a strike rate of 155.56 against KKR. He put on a stand of 76 with Sharma in just under nine overs and can be expected to produce more of his eye-catching helicopter shots as the tournament progresses.

At the death, it’s all about Trent Boult. KKR needed 15 balls off their final six deliveries and had Andre Russell – ranked third on the T20 Player Index – at the crease with Dinesh Karthik. Boult conceded two runs before removing Russell and Pat Cummins in consecutive balls to seal the win. He finished with impressive figures of two for 27 and is a guaranteed match winner.

For Sunrisers, the star of the show is Rashid Khan. The Afghanistan international has taken four wickets for just 42 runs from his eight overs, bowling with an economy of 5.25, and chipped in with a useful 17 off nine deliveries against RCB to provide some tail-end firepower.

Also, keep an eye on Manish Pandey at number three. His strike rate of 119.27 isn’t setting the world on fire but he’s the only member of the top four who’s posted 30+ scores in both matches. Possibly Sunrisers’ anchor.

What's the team news?

Mumbai parachuted Quinton de Kock straight into the starting XI after he completed his quarantine period and despite scoring just two runs – compared to Chris Lynn’s 49 runs in the opening fixture – he will likely retain his place. Hardik Pandya once again failed to bowl due to a shoulder problem but is expected to return to full fitness soon.

For Sunrisers, meanwhile, Kane Williamson is still recovering from an elbow injury which has kept him out of the opening two fixtures and is unlikely to feature on Saturday.

Opener Saha could find his position under threat after scoring seven and one in his first two matches, possibly opening the door for Jonny Bairstow to return to the top of the order or a debut for England’s Jason Roy. Mohammad Nabi and Sandeep Sharma will also be keen to return to the XI after being dropped against RCB.

Sunrisers Hyderabad win: 8

What's the weather forecast?

Temperatures are expected to hover between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius with conditions forecast to be sunny and still.

Are fans allowed in?

No, this match will be played behind closed doors owing to the Covid-19 situation in India.

What’s the prediction?

Mumbai have swiftly returned to winning ways following their trademark opening fixture defeat and, despite both squads being littered with T20 talent, it’s Sharma’s side who have immediately clicked. Mumbai win.
