West Indies have been penalised for a slow over-rate during the first Test against England in Antigua.

Kraigg Brathwaite’s side have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee after being found to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

They have also been docked two World Test Championship points. As a result, they have slipped one place in the standings and now sit eighth behind Bangladesh.

West Indies are the third side to be docked points during the 2021-23 cycle, with India losing three points and ninth-placed England losing 10 points for similar offences.

Under the pre-agreed playing conditions of the World Test Championship, teams are penalised one point and fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over they fail to bowl in the allotted time.

Captain Brathwaite accepted the proposed sanction without a formal hearing.

In the drawn first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, England declared with a lead of 285 on day five and took four early wickets to briefly threaten a victory. However, fifth-wicket pair Jason Holder and Nkrumah Bonner held on for over 200 balls to ensure the spoils were shared.

The second Test is scheduled to begin in Barbados on March 16.
