Canterbury edge out Scarborough College and Winchester College after rain claimed the final two days of action in Spain
Canterbury Academy have been named the first victors of The Cricketer Schools 100 tournament, edging out Scarborough College and Winchester College after rain claimed the final two days of action in Spain.
Canterbury had fallen to defeat against second-placed Scarborough when the two sides met, but wins over Winchester and Radley College were enough to see the Kent side sitting at the top of the table at the conclusion of the group fixtures thanks to their superior net-run rate.
With the semi-finals tantalisingly poised, Desert Springs decided it thought better of remaining a desert, and unleashed rain for two straight days.
After a weekend of high-quality, competitive cricket, it was a frustrating end to the competition, robbing us of what would have been another fascinating two days of competition.
In a speech made to the four teams, Canterbury's Fin Myers said: "This is not the way we would have liked to have won, however, due to the weather we have come out on top. Well done to everyone who took part in the week."
As the only comprehensive school in the tournament, Canterbury were understandably delighted with their efforts over the course of the two days.
"Being the only comprehensive school, we understood we had an underdog role to play," Myers continued.
"Seven years ago our school played in their first ever fixture and the team had to play in the school's football shirts.
"We have thoroughly enjoyed it and are incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity."
Canterbury head coach Dave Fulton added: "The standard of play, and talent on show has been fantastic.
"Playing against some traditional, established, fantastic cricketing schools, we tried to play on that underdog identity, while knowing we've got some real talent.
"Our squad has a never-say-die-attitude and unbelievable team spirit. To mix it with these schools has been a privilege and it's wonderful to see our team develop."
