Rajasthan Royals have parted company with head coach Andrew McDonald after a single year in the role.

The move comes as part of a restructuring of the franchise’s coaching team, following the appointment of Kumar Sangakkara as director of cricket.

McDonald only took on the role in October 2019 and oversaw Royals’ 2020 campaign, in which they challenged for a playoff spot but ultimately finished bottom of the league table.

"Everyone at Rajasthan Royals would like to thank Andrew for his efforts towards the IPL season 13,” said Jake Lush McCrum, the team’s chief operating officer.

“He coached the team during an incredibly challenging Covid-restricted period and we would like to wish him all the very best for his future endeavours with the Australian men's cricket team and the Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.”

No replacement for McDonald will be hired, with Sangakkara acting as “the decision-maker in the structure”.

The departure is one of several alterations to Rajasthan’s setup. Sanju Samson will captain this season, with Steve Smith released after a disappointing season.

Former Warwickshire batsman Trevor Penney, who has more recently worked with India, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and West Indies in a coaching capacity, has been signed up as lead assistant coach.

Penney has previously been among the coaching staff of Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

“It’s fantastic to have Trevor Penney on board here at Rajasthan Royals,” said Sangakkara. “He’s very experienced and understands the game very well which I am sure will help contribute to the players’ and squad's overall growth. I'm confident Trevor's appointment is going to set us on the right pathway and it will be wonderful to have him work with our squad.”
