Dale Steyn returns to South Africa setup for England T20s as Faf du Plessis and Kagiso Rabada rest

The Proteas have named two uncapped players in a 16-man squad for next week's short-form series

Dale Steyn is in line for his first international cap since March last year after being named in South Africa's 16-man squad for next week's T20 clashes with England.

The 36-year-old flew home from last summer's World Cup without playing a game after picking up a shoulder injury on IPL duty, and he announced his retirement from Test cricket in August in order to focus on prolonging his white-ball career.

However, further injuries have kept the paceman out of Proteas contention in recent months. A side strain restricted his Big Bash stint with beaten finalists Melbourne Stars to just four of its scheduled six matches, though his hopes of remaining in South Africa's T20 World Cup plans were boosted with a team-best 15 wickets during the second season of the Mzansi Super League.

Quinton de Kock will continue to lead the side, with regular captain Faf du Plessis and all-formats seamer Kagiso Rabada both earning a prolonged break following South Africa's 3-1 Test series loss to England last month.

Graeme Smith, the country's acting director of cricket, commented: "We have once again taken the opportunity to reward some of the hard workers of our domestic franchise system while some of our key senior players continue with their much-needed rest period.

"We have again put our faith in Quinton to lead this group of exciting cricketers, picking up where he left off in India where he showed exemplary leadership.

"With a T20 World Cup not too far away, we have begun the process of identifying several players whom we will be looking at over a period of time and hope that by the time September comes along, we will have the best possible squad of 15 representing South Africa."

Jon-Jon Smuts earns a recall to South Africa's T20 side, which Quinton de Kock will captain

Steyn's Cape Town Blitz teammate Sisanda Magala is one of two uncapped players named in the team. The 29-year-old seamer rewarded for a similarly impressive MSL campaign and 99 wickets at 23.79 in his short-form career to date.

However, Magala's participation in the series is subject to a late evaluation having been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series after failing to meet fitness standards.

Pite van Biljon, who led the batting averages for Tshwane Spartans during their run to the MSL final, earns his maiden call-up in du Plessis' place.

However, there is no much-rumoured international comeback for the Spartans' leading run-scorer AB de Villiers, who last played international T20 cricket in October 2017.

George Linde, Junior Dala and Anrich Nortje are among the players to miss out from South Africa's last T20 squad, which drew 1-1 in a three-match trip to India in September, while Jon-Jon Smuts returns after almost two years away from the international T20 circuit after fitness concerns ruled him out of that tour.

T20 squad: Quinton de Kock (c, wk), Temba Bavuma, Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts, Dale Steyn, Pite van Biljon, Rassie van der Dussen
