Defending champions Calmore move one step closer to Lord’s

Calmore remain on course to defend their title at Lord’s after defeating Grampound Road by nine wickets in the last 16 of the Voneus Village Cup.

The Hampshire champions were on top from start, with Josh Metcalfe (3 for 21) and Shawn Johnson (3 for 19) bowling unchanged for 16 overs and reducing the away side to 41 for 6.

And the spinners completed the job in quick time, with Ben Perry (2 for 11), Mark Lavelle (1 for 4) and Liam Carty (1 for 1) picking up the final four wickets to dismiss the Cornish champions inside 25 overs.

Ben Johns (23 not out) and Matt Taylor (26 not out) completed Calmore’s chase inside seven overs.

Alvanley complete quarter-final line-up with victory over Meigle

Alvanley advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2022 Voneus Village Cup after defeating Meigle by 122 runs in scorching hot conditions at Victory Park.

Skipper Michael Rowlands led the way with the bat for the 2021 runners-up, scoring 43 runs as they close on 187 for 9. They then bowled the Scottish champions out for just 65 runs, Ben Tumilty sealing the win with a double wicket maiden.

Calmore's victorious XI

Last gasp hat-trick seals narrow win for Goatacre over Pentyrch

Goatacre edged Pentyrch in a tense Voneus Village Cup encounter at Turkey Towers thanks to a last-gasp hat-trick from Conor Taylor.

Chasing 125, opener Jamie Mills almost single-handedly steered the Welsh side to victory, scoring 75 runs from 99 balls while haemorrhaging partners before falling with his side three runs shy of victory. However, with three wickets remaining and over four overs to score the winning runs, Pentyrch were comfortable favourites to reach the quarter-finals, and when Dominic Gambles scored a single off his second ball of the day, they were even closer to the last eight.

But Taylor stepped up to deliver one of the most memorable moments of the tournament to date, removing Gambles (bowled), Tegh Sehgal (caught and bowled) and Mike Grossett (lbw) in the space of three deliveries to secure an unexpected one-run win for his side.

Rainford advance to quarter-finals despite Ackworth resistance

All all-round team performance helped Rainford to victory over Ackworth in the Voneus Village Cup and into the last eight, writes John Williams.

In front of a large Jubilee Recreation Ground crowd, including a sizeable contingent from Ackworth, the visitors battled back from 57 for 8 to set Rainford a target of 167 to win.

In reply, Craig Woods scored an unbeaten half-century to help the tournament debutants wrap up the win in the 38th over.

Dumbleton deliver complete performance to defeat Milford Hall

Dumbleton produced an impressive all-round performance to defeat Milford Hall by seven wickets in the last 16 of the Voneus Village Cup, writes Philip Wilcox.

The two teams had met at the same stage of the competition two years ago, producing an epic encounter which Dumbleton narrowly won despite Milford Hall’s Stuart Phazey hitting 113 off 62 deliveries. This time, it was a decisive victory for Dumbleton.

Foxton Granta, Cropston and Redbourn progress to last eight

Foxton Granta, Cropston and Redbourn all kept their hopes of reaching Lord’s alive with victories in round six of the Voneus Village Cup.

Foxton defeated Leeds & Broomfield by 42 runs, with Douglas Rice (51 and 3 for 56) impressing with bat and ball.

Cropston edged Rolleston by four runs in a tight encounter in the Midlands. Skipper Stephen Punchard scored a bold century for his side, posting 111 runs from 97 balls.

2020 finalists Redbourn overcame 2021 semi-finalists Stoke Green by 49 runs, with a half-century for Charlie Mack (79) and three wickets for Callum Moyle.
