Headingley (fourth day of five): New Zealand 329 & 326, England 360 & 183-2 – England trail by 113 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand

Scorecard

England are on course for a 3-0 series win over New Zealand, requiring just 113 runs on day five with eight wickets in hand.

New Zealand resumed on 168 for 5 following a flurry of wickets late on day three but soon wrestled back some control thanks to yet another three-figure partnership between Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell.

Both players brought up their half-centuries shortly after lunch but Matthew Potts snared Mitchell lbw before he could kick on, dismissing the New Zealander for 56 and ending a 113-run sixth-wicket stand.

And just as he did in the first innings, Jack Leach swept through the remaining batters: Michael Bracewell caught by Zak Crawley at deep midwicket, Tim Southee bowled, Neil Wagner caught behind by substitute keeper Sam Billings, and Trent Boult bowled.

New Zealand were all out for 326, with Blundell stranded on 88. Leach finished with 5 for 66 and match figures of 10 for 166.

In reply, Boult once again gave his side a bright start, combining with captain Kane Williamson to run out Alex Leeds for nine in the fifth over. Bracewell then accounted for Crawley (25) after the opener hit the ball straight to Williamson.

However, an aggressive 132-run third-wicket partnership between Ollie Pope and Joe Root helped England to a promising position at close.

Pope brought up his half-century off 66 balls and will resume on 81 off 105 on Monday morning. Root is not out on 55 (80).
