SRI LANKA

Dimuth Karunaratne (83 & 23): Terrific at the top of the Sri Lanka first innings, giving his side a substantial platform before the collapse. 8

Danushka Gunathilanka (18 & 6): Rash shot selection the opener’s undoing. Sri Lanka are still struggling to find an effective opening partnership. 3

Dhananjaya de Silva (73 & 0; 0-16 & 0-24): Compact and considered first time around but could not dig in during the chase. Ineffective with the ball. 7

Kusal Mendis (27 & 86): Perhaps the best he has batted in any form of the game during England's time in Sri Lanka but dawdled between the wickets and paid the price. 8

Angelo Mathews (5 & 5): A rare failure for the veteran after such a consistent series. Safe hands in the field. 3

Roshen Silva (3 & 65): Undone by a fine Jennings catch in the first innings, played superbly in the second but could not see his team home. 7

Niroshan Dickwella (5 & 19): Still overly excitable behind the stumps. Unable to contribute with the bat. 4

Dilruwan Perera (0 & 5; 3-113 & 5-88): Once more, a reliable performer with the ball, finishing the series with 22 wickets, more than double the number of any of his team-mates. 8

Suranga Lakmal (3* & 11; 0-33 & 0-7): Used himself sparingly with the ball. 4

Lakshan Sandakan (2 & 7; 5-95 & 2-76): Dangerous with the ball, but let down by regularly overstepping. England found him hard to pick at times. 7

Malinda Pushpakumara (13 & 42*; 2-64 & 3-28): Proved himself to be a useful addition to the Sri Lankan side in his two Tests. 7.5

Jack Leach has enjoyed an excellent series

ENGLAND

Rory Burns (14 & 7): Not the end to the series the opener would have hoped for. 4

Keaton Jennings (13 & 1): Two failures with the bat, three sensational catches at short leg. 7

Jonny Bairstow (110 & 15): A masterful return to the England side with a belligerent century which obviously meant so much. 8

Joe Root (46 & 7): Cheap dismissals and a couple of drops at slip from the skipper. 5

Ben Stokes (57 & 42; 3-30 & 1-25): A massive impact throughout the game. A calming presence with the bat, the spark his team needed with the ball. 8

Jos Buttler (16 & 64): Important knock in the second innings, counter-punching England into a position of control. 7

Ben Foakes (13 & 36*): A reliable presence in the lower order with the bat and utterly assured with the gloves. 7.5

Moeen Ali (33 & 22; 0-55 & 4-92): Starts in both innings. Early breakthroughs with the ball second time around set the tone. 6.5

Adil Rashid (21* & 24; 5-49 & 0-73): Among the legspinner’s best Test performances. Able to conjure up big turn where the finger spinners struggled in the first innings, not so effective in the second, late runs with the bat. 7.5

Stuart Broad (0 & 1; 0-36 & 0-14): Worked hard for no reward with the ball. Two drops off his bowling at slip. 5

Jack Leach (2 & 0; 1-59 & 4-72): Another assured display of control from the left-armer, who contributed a vital run out. 7.5
