England director of cricket Ashley Giles is confident the bid to regain the Ashes and win successive T20 World Cups is in good hands under captains Joe Root and Eoin Morgan.

Twenty-eight-year-old Root has been retained as Test skipper despite failing to regain the urn from Australia and returning just two series wins from the last seven.

Morgan will remain leader of the white-ball team after being given time to consider his future following the 50-over World Cup success this summer.

No team has ever held both white-ball titles at the same time and the Irishman has informed Giles of his desire to stay on ahead of a tilt at history.

"We met a month after the World Cup final and he wanted some time to consider his future which is the way he operates," explained Giles. "Thankfully he rang me a couple of weeks after that saying he was committed to going forwards and looking forward to it.

"I am delighted. He is a fantastic leader of men and with us losing (coach) Trevor (Bayliss) it is important we retain some consistency in that leadership going forward. We've got two T20 World Cups in two years."

Ashley Giles has full confidence in England's future

While uncertainty over Morgan's future centred around his fitness and motivation, the precariousness of Root's future was for an altogether different reason after England drew 2-2 with Australia following a series of indifferent displays across the summer.

Geoffrey Boycott was among those who had urged the Yorkshireman to consider his future as captain.

Though not always able to produce performances brimming with quality, England showed great character in dispatches against Australia. The dramatic one-wicket win at Headingley, defeat inside the final hour at Old Trafford and the series-levelling win at The Oval all highlighted the team's ability to respond under pressure.

Giles believes that quality comes from Root, who is relishing the prospect of working alongside a new coach.

"Joe continues," he added. "He has my full support. I think he has done a great job in challenging circumstances with a team with a number of spots up for grabs. When a team runs through the line like they did this year that is great credit to him.

"What he is looking forward to is this appointment of the new coach where he can sit down the plan the future of this team. What he should be concerned with now is getting the Ashes back in two years time. We've got time to plan for that and to a degree, we've all judged on that."
