England's first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Dambulla has been abandoned.

Earlier, England made a fast start to proceedings having lost the toss, with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow quickly settling into the Sri Lankan pacemen and taking advantage of the short boundaries.

The tourists’ openers came within one run of their 12th half-century stand in 20 innings before Bairstow nibbled at a regulation delivery from Nuwan Pradeep and Niroshan Dickwella completed a comfortable catch, tumbling forwards.

Refusing to be encumbered by his partner’s demise, Roy attempted to continue England’s aggressive start to the series but succeeded only in slicing Akila Dananjaya to mid-off. From 49 without loss, England were 51 for two.

Eoin Morgan and Joe Root stabilised the innings but then the elements intervened with the away side 92 for two. The match was called off at around 8.30pm local time.

The second ODI is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with a start time of 5.15am BST.
