England recorded their first away Test victory since 2016, but the result was sullied slightly by the two separate incidents where streakers invaded the pitch
The Barmy Army have told supporters "don't be an idiot" after England's first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle was twice interrupted by streakers.
England recorded their first away Test victory since 2016, but the result was sullied slightly by two separate incidents on different days where streakers invaded the pitch.
The first occurred during the innings break on the second day, with the individual in question vaulting the roller as groundstaff used it on the pitch.
The second came as England won the match on the fourth day. A man entered the field and congratulated England on their performance before leading security officials on a chase across the outfield, only to be stopped once he had crossed the boundary.
The second streaker at the end of play on the fourth day
"After events in Galle, a note to all fans," The Barmy Army tweeted on Wednesday. "Entering the field of play is illegal. Streaking is considered the height of offence and an insult to the religious beliefs of the Sri Lankan people. Offenders will be arrested, placed before court and imprisoned. Don’t be an idiot."
There is substance behind this warning from the Barmy Army. In 2016 an Australian fan was fined 3,000 rupees (around £13) and sentenced to a week in prison after running across the pitch at the Pallekele International Stadium during a rain-affected session on the opening day of the series between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Though security did not intervene at any stage, the individual was arrested the next day, and England fans would be wise to avoid the same fate.
