Jonny Bairstow reached 1,000 runs for the calendar year during England's second one-day international against Sri Lanka.

The opener became just the sixth Englishman to pass the notable landmark as the tourists batted first in Dambulla.

Bairstow joins an elite group which also includes David Gower, Chris Broad, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott.

Trott was the previous man to hit the milestone, in 2011, when he finished the year with a massive 1,315 runs in the format.

Bairstow has hit four centuries and two fifties in 50-over cricket for his country in 2018, with a top score of 139 against Australia at Trent Bridge in June.

He made 26 on Saturday before being bowled by Thisara Perera.
