In 2021, as a teenager, Smale was selected by Western Storm to form part of their regional academy programme, by which point she had already represented Wales on multiple occasions at youth level.

Smale was picked to train under the direction of England Academy coaches in 2019 as part of the national pathway's spin bowling group at Loughborough.

A student at Monmouth School for Girls and captain of Wales' under-18 side, she was part of a team that won gold medals at the School Games National Finals in 2021.

On her inclusion in Storm's squad, her new captain Sophie Luff said: "She's got stuck in since day one and is very competitive. We've definitely found that out in the nets! I think she'll do really well this year and I'm looking forward to seeing her embrace the challenge of stepping up to this level."
