A left-arm spinner who has had to wait his turn behind the likes of Abdur Razzak, Enamul Haque Jnr and Saqlain Sajab, Nazmul Islam is considered a potential partner for off-spinner Mehedi Hasan at the World Cup despite only having a handful of ODI appearance under his belt.
After a first-class debut at 19 in 2010, Islam’s breakthrough season came in 2014 when he took 31 wickets in the National Cricket League, but it took a starring role for Rangpur Riders in the 2017 BPL to finally earn Islam his international debut.
12 wickets at 16.33 in the tournament saw him open the bowling in his T20I debut against Sri Lanka and claim 2-25 – by far the best Bangladeshi figures in that game – and he has since made 12 more appearances in that format for his country.
An ODI debut followed seven months later where he bowled eight overs with the impressive economy rate of 3.62 and now, with a one-off Test appearance under his belt, Islam looks set to play a part for Bangladesh at the 2019 World Cup.
