Captain Bismah Maroof is Pakistan’s joint most experienced T20I player alongside Sana Mir with 106 T20I caps (as of January 26).

However, Maroof, who broke into the Pakistan team at the age of 15 and soon established herself as a regular member of the team, looks set to overtake Sana Mir as the selectors have decided against including Mir in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Since making her T20I debut against Ireland in 2009, Maroof had hit 2,183 runs at an average of 27.28, a strike rate of 92.85 and a high score of 70 not in her T20I career up until January 2020.

With the ball she has also taken 36 wickets at an average of 22.08, an economy rate of 5.61, and with best figures of 3-21.

After the T20 World Cup in 2016, Maroof took over captaining duties of the T20 team from Mir and she has done a stellar job so far, with Pakistan seventh in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings ahead of the tournament and performances in T20 cricket improving year on year.

Maroof is seen as a reliable and consistent batsman who holds an innings together and reads the game well.

She has the ability to either play a supporting role with her batting partner or play an attacking role in which she can take charge and score at a high strike-rate.

She was placed 11th in the ICC T20I batting rankings prior to the tournament.

During Pakistan’s 2019 T20I series against England, she scored 86 runs at an average of 28.7 and a high score of 60.

Maroof will hope to take this good form into the upcoming tournament and will be sure to lead from the front.
