The most impressive player in recent Big Bash competition, Short is not only a combative opener, he can pick up wickets with his wrist spin too
Born: August 9, 1990
Role: Left-hand bat, left-arm wrist spin
Opener D’Arcy Short spent over five years on the fringes of state cricket at Western Australia and very nearly quit the sport altogether before a breakout JLT Cup and Big Bash season in 2017-18 with Western Australia and Hobart Hurricanes respectively completely rejuvenated his career.
A not out 119 in the JLT ensured Short was in the form of his life going into the Big Bash and he delivered in spades, crashing 572 runs at an average of 57.20 and a strike rate of 148.57 as he forced his way into international recognition and a big money IPL deal with Rajasthan Royals.
515 runs and four half-centuries at an average of 32.18 in Short’s first 18 T20I proved to be a record incredibly similar to his stellar domestic T20 record but he has yet to hit the same heights in ODIs.
However, 404 runs at an average of 80.80 and a strike rate of 138.35 in this year’s JLT Cup is Short’s best return in 50-over cricket yet so when the time comes to add to his four ODI innings’, he looks set to make it count this time.
