New Zealand batsman Martin Guptil celebrates his century against Pakistan

It was a case of a very lucky 13 for Martin Guptill as the New Zealander’s 13th one-day international century helped his country complete a white-ball whitewash of Pakistan.

New Zealand edged home by 15 runs against the beleaguered tourists on Friday to wrap up an increasingly difficult tour for the visitors, who were unable to chase down the 272 required for victory.

Having been put into the field after losing the toss, the Pakistanis watched helpless as Guptill hit four boundaries and a six in making exactly 100 from 126 balls before falling to Rumann Raess.

A stand of 112 runs with Ross Taylor for the third wicket was crucial in the Blackcaps putting together a competitive total, with Taylor contributing 59, while Colin DeGrandhomme added an enterprising 29 in double-quick time at the death to leave the hosts 271 for seven from their 50 overs in Wellington.

Matt Henry, who took four wickets, claims a catch to dismiss Haris Sohail

In reply, Pakistan’s top order coughed and spluttered their way to 57 for five, with Matt Henry the destroyer in chief.

Henry claimed each of the tourists’ top three and finished with figures of 4-53 as the away side gave themselves too much to do in the chase.

Haris Sohail, who made 63, and Shadab Khan at least showed some resistance, with a sixth-wicket stand of 105, but Pakistan were bowled out for 256 from the final ball of the 49th over.

The defeat means New Zealand win the series 5-0.

Pakistan will need to regroup prior to the three-match T20 series, which is due to begin at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Monday.
