SOUTH AFRICA

Quinton de Kock (69): Surrendered his wicket to Rashid with a howler of a stroke, having marshalled the innings so well in the opening 20 overs. 6

Reeza Hendricks (11): Undone by a pearler from Mahmood, which cut him in half and kissed the top of the off bail. 4

Temba Bavuma (29): Looked in tidy nick once again early on but could not pick Rashid. 4.5

Rassie van der Dussen (5): Reprieved from a first-ball duck by the DRS confusion. Lasted nine more deliveries before hacking at Moeen Ali and having middle and off knocked back. 2

Jon Jon Smuts (31; 0-12): Seemed to be ticking along nicely when he was run out after an awful mix-up with David Miller. 5

David Miller (69): Made up for the Smuts run out with a powerful display of hitting towards the back end of the innings. 7.5

Andile Phehlukwayo (14; 0-23): Another to find himself lost to Rashid’s variations. Two expensive overs. 4

Beuran Hendricks (3; 3-59): Bowled with pace and lift off a length, often troubling England's batsmen. 7

Lutho Sipamla (10*; 1-42): Shared in a stand of 52 for the eighth wicket with Miller. Impressive with ball in hand. 7

Lungi Ngidi (DNB; 3-63): A dreadful burst with the new ball set the tone for the England chase. Dropped Banton at a critical moment. Came back strongly towards the end of England's innings. 4

Tabraiz Shamsi (DNB; 1-58): A useful contribution with the ball, including an excellent trap to snare Joe Root at leg slip. Excellent figures undone by Denly in his final over. 6.5

Lutho Sipamla celebrates the wicket of Jonny Bairstow

ENGLAND

Jonny Bairstow (43): Got England off to a lightning-quick start, dining out on Ngidi’s early overs, before flopping a catch up to midwicket. 7

Jason Roy (21): Did not look quite as set as his opening partner, and got out trying to hoik a wide bouncer from way outside off into the leg side. 4

Joe Root (49; 0-42): Got perhaps two more overs than might have been expected, but still kept the rate down. A useful knock to steady the ship before he fell into the Shamsi trap at leg slip. 6

Eoin Morgan (9): Narrowly avoided being caught in the deep before mistiming a return catch to Hendricks. Gameplan with the spinners worked well. 4

Joe Denly (66): Played two crucial roles - first in calming a brief wobble, alongside Root; then becoming the senior partner with Banton. A well-paced innings ended tamely with a chip to deep cover. 7.5

Tom Banton (32): Run-a-ball contribution in a stand of 70 with Denly, while playing in an unfamiliar role at six. Affected the run out of Smuts. 6.5

Moeen Ali (17*; 1-42): Cool and calm with the ball, strangling the innings in the middle overs with pace off. 7

Tom Curran (5; 0-38): Found swing at the start of the innings, and used his slower balls cleverly towards the end. Wicketless, but his role was about more than wickets. Gave his wicket away in a strangely manic knock. 7

Adil Rashid (2; 3-51): A little more speed than usual, but with all the same variations. This was Rashid’s best display for some time, mixing intelligent strategy with acutely accurate execution. 9

Chris Jordan (0*; 0-59): Had a tough time against Miller at the death, did not land his yorkers as regularly as we have come to expect. 4

Saqib Mahmood (DNB; 1-17): Just the five overs for the Lancashire seamer, which seemed somewhat unlucky given his miserly performance at the top of the innings. A beauty to do for Hendricks. 8
