The Cricketer runs down the who, what, where, when, why, which channel and how wet it will be as South Africa and England meet at The Wanderers for the final ODI of the three-match series
South Africa face England in the final ODI of their three-match series, with the hosts still holding the lead after winning the fist instalment convincingly and seeing the second clash abandoned after just 11.2 overs.
FIRST ODI: Newlands, Cape Town – South Africa win by seven wickets
SECOND ODI: Durban, Kingsmead – match abandoned
THIRD ODI: The Wanderers, Johannesburg (Sunday, February 9, 10am local time, 8am GMT)
Well, England were comprehensively outplayed in the first match of the series, struggling with the bat on a slow surface – Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan were all dismissed inside 20 overs.
Joe Denly justified his inclusion in the side with a fine 87 which, at the very least, gave England a total to defend.
Any hope of victory, however, was soon extinguished by a 173-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma.
England’s chances, therefore, rest with a need for a much-improved performance in Johannesburg. Chris Woakes apart, the tourists’ bowling in the first ODI looked unthreatening and somewhat toothless, while the absences of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes mean that Morgan’s side lacks some of its brutal middle order potency.
They will have to be better – and hope that the Proteas are less clinical – if they are to level the series.
Temba Bavuma fell two runs short of a memorable century in the first game
Moeen Ali is part of the squad after taking a break from red-ball cricket, though he missed out on selection for the first two games of the series. He is accompanied by Denly, Chris Jordan, Sam Curran and Dawid Malan, all of whom missed out on World Cup selection.
Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson made their ODI debuts at Newlands, while Saqib Mahmood is still waiting to make his 50-over bow.
Buttler, Stokes and Mark Wood have been rested, while Jofra Archer is injured. Pat Brown also misses out with a stress fracture in his back, having been named in the original squad.
England squad: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Tom Banton (wk), Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Matthew Parkinson, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes.
For South Africa, there have been plenty of new faces, with some others left out. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have been rested after the Test series, while there is no place for Dale Steyn who is being held back for the T20s.
Aiden Markram misses out with a broken finger which ended his Test series prematurely. Bjorn Fortuin, Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne and Lutho Sipamla represent the new blood.
South Africa squad: Quinton de Kock (c & wk), Temba Bavuma, Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Janneman Malan, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lutho Sipamla, Jon-Jon Smuts, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne.
Tom Banton made his ODI debut at Newlands
After the wet weather of Durban, more of the same is expected in Johannesburg, with thunderstorms and an 80 per cent likelihood of rain.
