Jeetan Patel backs England's spin options: "There are plenty of stocks there"

After Dom Bess took five wickets on day three, the spin-bowling consultant insists there is plenty to work with

England's spin-bowling consultant Jeetan Patel is confident he has enough talent to work with.

Dom Bess became the third youngster English spinner to take a five-for on day three of the third Test at Port Elizabeth.

The Somerset youngster was a late call-up to the squad as cover for the ill Jack Leach, who has since been sent home.

Moeen Ali has made himself unavailable for red-ball cricket for the foreseeable future while Adil Rashid continues to be hindered by a shoulder problem.

Matt Parkinson was included in the initial squad but has been held back, while the likes of Amar Virdi and Liam Dawson are waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

The development of English spinners has been hindered in recent years by the timing of the County Championship, which has been pushed further towards the front of the season.

In 2020, nine rounds of the red-ball season will take place before the end of May when spinners are likely to become peripheral figures.

But Patel, who is in place through until the end of the Sri Lanka tour in March, is happy with the options available for him to work with.

"I think they're ok," he told Sky Sports of the strength in depth. "Obviously at the moment we're three down with no Rash, no Mo and Leachy is out.

"We have a young guy like Bessy come in and do his job so well. And the guys are so excited for him.

"Parkinson, who has made huge strides since he has been here, it is a shame he is not going to be able to play - certainly not in this game. Then you've got Verdi and Dawson. There are plenty of stocks there.

"The only way I can explain it is without experience they're not going to get much better, but then how do you offer them experience when most times you can only ever play two?"
