A former Ranji Trophy cricketer has collapsed and died while batting in a district game in India.

Rajesh Ghodge had scored 30 in a local game in Goa on Sunday when the incident occurred while he was at the non-striker's end, according to agency reports.

"He was at the non-striker end when he collapsed. He was immediately shifted to a hospital," a senior member of the Margao Cricket Club told PTI.

Ghodge was rushed from the Rajendra Prasad Stadium but pronounced dead at a private health facility later in the day.

The batsman represented Goa during the 1999-2000 Ranji Trophy season, playing in two first-class matches.

He also turned out for the state in eight List A games, the most recent of which came in 2005.

"He used to play cricket almost everyday. We are completely shocked," Poorv Bhembre, the Margao club secetary, told IANS.
