Head coach Trevor Bayliss appeared to have accepted the likelihood that the young allrounder would not be available for the game in Colombo, which is due to start on Friday.
"We'll have to assess it in the next day or so to see whether we risk it or not," Bayliss said.

"But we might not be in a position to do that."
Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Olly Stone would all be vying to fill the void created by Curran's absence, should the Surrey man not be fit to feature.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be without offspinner Akila Dananjaya, who is flying to Australia for tests on his bowling action.
