The seamer has been struggling with a shoulder injury which cut short his IPL stint earlier this year

Dale Steyn has been forced out of the Cricket World Cup through injury.

The South Africa seamer has been replaced in his country's squad by Beuran Hendricks.

A statement from Cricket South Africa on Tuesday said that Steyn has "suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future".

Steyn had previously had to withdraw from the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad in the Indian Premier League with a similar issue, and had been a doubt to even make the start of the World Cup.

The news inflicts yet another blow on the Proteas during a dismal start to the tournament.

Opening-day defeat by England preceded a second loss, against Bangladesh at The Oval on Sunday, to leave their semi-final hopes in danger within the first week of the competition.

Furthermore, they have suffered two other injury worries - the blow to the head sustained by Hashim Amla against England, which resulted in him missing the Bangladesh game following a concussion test, and the hamstring problem which will keep Lungi Ngigi out of the clash with India at Southampton on Wednesday.
