ASHES PLAYER RATINGS: Ben Stokes stars for England as Marnus Labuschagne shows his fight

SAM MORSHEAD AT LORD'S: A quite brilliant second-innings century, part rearguard, part artillery. Stokes is England’s Mr Reliable at present. Perhaps underused with the ball

ENGLAND

Rory Burns (53 & 29): Has now done enough to bank his place for the remainder of the series, and probably beyond. Played the short ball well in the first innings, though dropped twice. Assured in the second before being done by a brute of a rising delivery from Siddle. 7

Jason Roy (0 & 2): The question mark gets bigger over Roy the Test Opener’s head. Two poor shots against the new ball and, with the County Championship back in action for one week only, a raft of opening bats will be thinking they have a shot of replacing the Surrey man. 2

Joe Root (14 & 0; DNB & 0-7): The captain is in a bit of a quagmire of batting form. Here, he picked up his first ever Test golden duck - and his first nought against Australia. Seemed to captain the side with more composure than at Edgbaston, sticking to plans and adjusting when required. 4

Joe Denly (30 & 26; DNB & 0-0): Looked at his most assured in England colours, especially in the first innings. But could not capitalise on a couple of starts. How long will Ed Smith keep faith? 5

Ben Stokes (13 & 115*; 0-17 & 0-16): A quite brilliant second-innings century, part rearguard, part artillery. He is England’s Mr Reliable at present. Perhaps underused with the ball. 9

Jos Buttler (12 & 31): Feeble dismissal in the first innings but played a crucial role in the second, anchoring the side after a flurry of wickets and laying the platform for Stokes to go big later on. Six feels much more his spot. 4.5

Jonny Bairstow (52 & 30*): Showed more gumption than most of his teammates first time around and played with freedom in the second innings. Kept well in often difficult conditions, with the Lord’s wobble and Archer’s rapid speed causing havoc. 7.5

Chris Woakes (32 & DNB; 3-61 & 0-11): Made runs when needed. Again. Took wickets at crucial moments. Again. Strangely underused in the second innings. 7

Jofra Archer (12 & DNB; 2-59 & 3-32): When was the last time you saw such an impactful Test debut? Fast, furious and absolutely compelling viewing. 9

Stuart Broad (11 & DNB; 4-65 & 0-29): Made to fade somewhat into the background because of Archer’s explosive debut but Broad was instrumental in the first innings. Still capable of taking key wickets with brilliant deliveries. 8

Jack Leach (6* & DNB; 1-19 & 3-37): A performance which should see him stay in the side for some time. Bowled with discipline and achieved plenty of turn, used the footmarks well. 7.5

AUSTRALIA

David Warner (3 & 5): Looks all at sea in this series. Australia won’t drop him, but he has barely got the ball off the square so far. 2

Cameron Bancroft (13 & 16): Just doesn’t look right. Still seems to be falling too much over to the offside, and though he stuck it out in both innings there never seemed to be any danger of him making a major score. 3

Usman Khawaja (36 & 2): Sublime for an hour or so in the first innings but couldn’t go on. Square up by Archer. Not producing the innings of substance Australia need. 4

Steve Smith (92 & DNB; 0-6 & DNB): You might call it brave, you might call it foolhardy, but the sight of Smith returning to bat after being struck by Archer was quite remarkable. Up until that point he had been supreme once again. How he comes back from this concussion will be intriguing. 9

Marnus Labuschagne (59): Called on midway through the game and responded with a gritty fifty. Won’t have been happy with the nature of his dismissal. 8

Travis Head (7 & 42*): A really important contribution in the second innings. Alongside Labuschagne, ensured Australia saved the Test. 6

Matthew Wade (6 & 1): Three failures and a century in the series so far. Very good in the outfield. 3

Tim Paine (23 & 4): Now 4 for 29 in correct DRS referrals during his captaincy. Second-innings dismissal did not go down well. 3

Pat Cummins (20 & 1*; 3-61 & 3-35): Continues to pick up wickets and hurry batsmen. The fact he has proven a more reliable option with the bat than either of Australia’s openers is a big plus, too. 8

Peter Siddle (9 & DNB; 1-48 & 2-54): Has been the most unlucky bowler in this series, and catches continued to go down off his bowling here. Expensive in the first spell of the first innings but pretty clinical thereafter. Until Stokes teed off. 7

Nathan Lyon (6 & DNB; 3-68 & 0-102): Bowled with precision and contained England in the first innings but was utterly outplayed by Stokes in the second. Pulled level with Dennis Lillee in third place on the Australian all-time wicket-takers’ list. 6

Josh Hazlewood (3* & DNB; 3-58 & 0-43): Blew England’s top order way at the beginning of the game, sticking to penetrating lines and lengths and asking the batsmen to make mistakes. Not as impressive in the second innings. 7
