When Josh Tongue was bowled by Prasidh Krishna, Chris Woakes emerged from the players' balcony, his left arm in a sling, buried beneath his jumper, and able only to hold the bat in his right hand.

He put on a 10-run stand with Gus Atkinson, albeit without facing a ball, in a remarkable show of courage from the veteran allrounder, even if it ultimately ended in defeat.
