Headingley (day three of four): Nottinghamshire 228 & 392-8d, Yorkshire 159 & 176-5 -Yorkshire need another 287 runs to win with five second-innings wickets remaining

Liam Patterson-White claimed the key wickets of Adam Lyth, Dawid Malan and James Wharton during the third evening to keep league leaders Nottinghamshire on course for another County Championship victory having set Yorkshire a 463-run target at Headingley.

Yorkshire made a confident start to their unlikely pursuit, reaching 114 for 1 after tea, with opener Lyth contributing 44.

But Patterson-White's left-arm spin was introduced, and after 11 balls, he had removed Lyth caught behind cutting and Malan bowled for 12 playing back to one that turned appreciably. He later had Wharton lbw for 58.

Struggling Yorkshire are aiming to avoid a fourth defeat in seven Division One games and closed on 176 for five from 56.3 overs, needing 287 more. Nottinghamshire are chasing a fourth win in seven.

The visitors, for whom Dillon Pennington struck in the day’s final over, declared their second innings on 393 for eight midway through the afternoon, Joe Clarke top-scoring with a fluent 94 off 121 balls

Utilita Bowl (day three of four): Hampshire 154 & 165, Sussex 297 & 23-1 - Sussex won by nine wickets

Jack Carson's five-wicket haul wrapped up a simple three-day victory for Sussex as they won on the road for the first time in the County Championship this season.

Off-spinner Carson found turn, bounce and a bagful of Hampshire wickets as he ripped through three of the four remaining batters to pick up five for 26 – his best of the campaign.

Hampshire were bowled out for 165, and despite Oli Carter falling, Tom Haines and Tom Alsop easily knocked off the 23 runs needed to take them past the winning line before lunch.

Sussex's third win of their return to Division One came with 20 points, to keep tabs on the leading title contenders.

Kia Oval (day three of four): Essex 217 & 479, Surrey 279 & 32-0 - Surrey need another 386 runs to win with 10 second-innings wickets remaining

Charlie Allison, a 20-year-old with a previous first-class best of just 28, hit a memorable maiden hundred to stun champions Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Allison's brilliant 140, in his sixth first-class match, helped Essex rack up a second innings 479 and leave Surrey with an unlikely victory target of 418. By stumps, in eight overs’ batting, they reached 32 without loss.

Surrey’s six-pronged pace attack was neutered on an easing pitch, leaving Rory Burns’s side facing a stiff final day battle for a draw to maintain their unbeaten start to the Rothesay County Championship season.

Towards the end of the innings of his young life, Colchester-born Allison even hit a weary Dan Worrall for two sixes over long on, and there were also 19 fours in a 235-ball epic spanning just over five hours.
