Fixture: Sussex v Glamorgan

Venue: 1st Central County Ground, Hove

Dates: Sunday, July 4, 2021 - Wednesday, July 7, 2021

Start time: 11am

What's the lowdown?

Sussex are currently bottom of Group Three and 28 points adrift of qualifying for Division Two of the divisional stage. Ben Brown's side have lost five of their past six red-ball matches and our without a win since the second round of the County Championship, coincidentally an eight-wicket victory over Glamorgan in Cardiff.

However, while that result may provide brief optimism for Sussex's fans, Glamorgan's form will likely burst their bubble. The Welsh county have lost just once since being defeated by Sussex, claiming two victories and three draws, and currently lie fourth in the North Group with 99 points and an outside chance of contesting for the title at the end of the season.

Who's in form?

Several players have put in good individual performances with the bat for Sussex, including skipper Brown (462 runs) and Stiaan van Zyl (417). However, the pick of the bunch in Tom Haines who has five 50+ knocks (two centuries) and an average of 43.20 from 15 innings. The return to fitness of Phil Salt, who missed the first eight Championship outings though injury, could be a welcome batting boost.

With the ball, Ollie Robinson leads the way, with 29 wickets in eight innings at an average if 14.72, while Jack Carson has 25.

For Glamorgan, David Lloyd and Kiran Carlson have dominated the batting headlines, with 539 runs and 580 runs, respectively. However, beyond those two, only three other batsmen have passed 200 red-ball runs in 2021. Lloyd has also excelled with the ball, taking 18 wickets at an average of 20.22, and is third in Glamorgan's wicket-taking charts behind Michael Hogan (22) and Michael Neser (19).

Who's said what?

Ian Salisbury, Surrey's red-ball coach during the T20 season, discussed the player availability issues before the game, especially in terms of COVID and injuries. "As a club we’ve been as strict as we can on COVID protocols, including self-isolation. After the work everyone in the country has done over the last year and a half, we’re taking our responsibilities very seriously.", he told the Sussex website.

David Lloyd, the Glamorgan batsman, told his club's website "We've shown some really good signs in the four-day stuff, especially with that great win against Lancashire." It has been a month since that victory, where Glamorgan ran out winners by six wickets. Lloyd returned 62 runs across his two innings in that fixture, a score he'll be looking to build on tomorrow.
