Yorkshire captain Steve Patterson confirms T20 retirement: "We would be better off playing a young lad"

The White Rose will have two skippers for the 2020 campaign after the 36-year-old's decision to step away from the shortened format

Steve Patterson has retired from T20 cricket and will no longer captain Yorkshire in the shortened format.

The 36-year-old was an ever-present in the County Championship and played six One-Day Cup matches for the White Rose last season.

But he featured in just one Blast match and has taken the decision to step away from the 20-over game.

"I'm going to step back from T20 cricket," said Patterson. "I think we would be better off playing a young lad in that format so that they can gain experience."

Patterson revealed upon the conclusion of last season that he was strongly considering giving up the role but indicated he would remain as the Championship and one-day skipper.

The one-club man became captain across all formats on a permanent basis from the start of last term, having occupied the role on an interim basis in 2018.

Yorkshire were led by Tom Kohler-Cadmore during the Blast in 2019 and he is a strong candidate as they move towards a two-captain structure.

"We've got some good young leaders in our squad and we're looking at how we can develop them," head coach Andrew Gale told BBC Radio Leeds.

"We'll have two separate captains this season. We'll decide who that will be in the next few weeks."
