Scorecard

Melbourne Stars eased to their first Women's Big Bash League win at the fifth time of asking against Melbourne Renegades at Eastern Oval.

Sophie Day (4 for 19) and Annabel Sutherland (3 for 17) combined to dismiss the Renegades for just 91 in 19 overs.

Hayley Matthews struck 24 and Carly Lesson scored 15 but seven batters failed to reach double figures in a sub-par performance.

Lauren Winfield-Hill (9) fell in the fourth over to leave Stars 17 for 2 in the chase.

Alice Capsey (19) was caught and bowled by Sarah Coyte and when Kim Gareth followed in the next over Renegades has renewed hope.

But Sutherland hit a poised 42 from 48 deliveries and helped by captain Nicole Faltum guided Stars home with no serious alarms.

After three defeats and a no result from their first four games, the 2020-21 runners-up are finally off the mark to climb off the bottom of the WBBL table.

They are replaced, however, by Renegades who have now lost their last four in a row and are back in action on Sunday (October) when they face table-toppers Sydney Sixers.
