Northamptonshire have signed Tom Taylor on a three-year deal from Leicestershire.

The 25-year-old allrounder has joined the Wantage Road club on loan for the remainder of this campaign, before linking up on a permanent basis thereafter until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Taylor, whose brother – James – began his career at Derbyshire before joining Surrey, is available for Northants’ match on Friday against Somerset.

He said: “I’m extremely excited about joining up with Northamptonshire. I can’t wait to get going now and focus on helping them win games and trophies over the coming years.”

From Staffordshire originally, he has made 50 appearances at first team level for Derbyshire and Leicestershire , and there was interest in his signature from other counties before signing for Northamptonshire.

Northants assistant coach John Sadler, with whom Taylor worked at Leicestershire, added: “Tom’s a very good all-round cricketer, he’s got high potential with a brilliant attitude and he’s a great acquisition for our squad.

“I saw him as a real young lad out of the academy at Derby and he burst onto the scene with huge potential but quite raw. For the age he’s at now, he’s got a real good perspective and a good view of the game and he’s going to keep getting better and better. He’s a genuine, three-dimensional cricketer across all three formats.

“His attitude is superb, he’s here to win and be part of a unit that’s going to win trophies in the years to come.”

Taylor averages 20.02 with the bat in red-ball cricket and 48.4 in List A games. With the ball, he has taken 96 first-class wickets at 32.12 apiece.
