Jofra Archer remains a doubt for the Indian Premier League but is due to resume bowling next week in an effort to ramp up his recovery from separate hand and elbow injuries.

The 25-year-old has been passed fit by a consultant to conduct light training this week following surgery on his right hand during which a shard of glass was removed.

He went under the knife on March 29 to treat the blow, which he suffered before the tour of India when he dropped a fish tank in his bath.

Following two weeks of rehabilitation, he has been cleared to move onto the next stage of his recovery, which will include bowling from next week. England and Sussex medical teams will monitor his progress throughout.

However, no decision has been taken regarding when he might return to competitive action.

Rajasthan Royals were without Archer, the IPL MVP in 2020, for their tournament opener against Punjab Kings on Monday (April 12) and are braced to be without the quick for a large chunk of the group phase.

Team director Kumar Sangakkara insists "no risks" will be taken over the England seamer's fitness and that contingency plans are in place if he is ruled out.

Archer's future availability is complicated by two additional factors.

IPL bio-secure bubble rules state that players must undergo seven days of quarantine before joining up with their respective teams.

Furthermore, a full assessment of the long-term elbow injury which dogged him during the India tour has not yet been carried out. An update will be provided once he has returned to bowling during the week commencing April 19.

England are not back in action until early June when they face New Zealand in a two-Test series at Lord's (June 2-6) and Edgbaston (June 10-14).
