Shubman Gill century sets Gujarat Titans on their way to playoff qualification

Gill made 101 from 58 balls as the mainstay of the Titans' 188 for 9 from their 20 overs, before the home side's bowlers produced a disciplined bowling display to make sure Sunrisers Hyderabad ended well short of an achievable total

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans 188-9, Sunrisers Hyderabad 154-9 - Gujarat Titans won by 34 runs

Shubman Gill's excellent hundred laid the foundations for Gujarat Titans to secure playoff qualification and eliminate Sunrisers Hyderabad from the 2023 Indian Premier League.

Gill made 101 from 58 balls as the mainstay of the Titans' 188 for 9 from their 20 overs, before the home side's bowlers produced a disciplined display to make sure Sunrisers ended well short of an achievable total.

Heinrich Klaasen made 64 for Hyderabad but no other batsman passed 27 as Mohammed Shami leapt joint top of the wicket-taking standings for the tournament with a brilliant 4 for 21.

Gill's century, which included 13 fours but just one six, was supported by a considered 47 from Sai Sudharsan.

Sudharsan's knock, made from 36 deliveries, was very much the supporting act in a second-wicket stand worth 147 in 13.4 overs, after Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the third ball of the Gujarat innings.

Thereon in, Gill received little backup, with no other Gujarat batsman reaching double figures.

Kumar finished with 5 for 30, including three wickets in the final over of the innings - there were four in total, once Noor Ahmad's run out is taken into account.

Still, Sunrisers were left needing nine runs per over through their chase to bank victory.

Chances of that diminished considerably within the first 13 balls of the reply, as the Hyderabad top order fell apart at the seams.

Shami was the primary architect, dismissing Anmolpreet Singh, Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi, as Sunrisers found themselves 29 for 4 in the fifth over.

Klaasen's resistance was admirable, but it took until an eighth-wicket stand with Kumar worth 66 for the South African to receive any sort of support.

Kumar made a run-a-ball 27 but the damage wreaked by Shami early on left the remaining task insurmountable. Mohit Sharma ran through the bottom order with 4 for 28.

Gujarat, the defending champions, are guaranteed a top-two finish. Sunrisers, licking their wounds, will have to start planning for 2024.
