KL Rahul became the fastest India batter to reach 5,000 career T20 runs but it was not enough to inspire Punjab Kings to victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

The keeper-batter reach the landmark via four singles from his first five deliveries of the match.

But they were his only contributions as Bhuveneshwar Kumar had him caught at midwicket by Kedar Jadhav from his first delivery at the start of the fourth over.

Sunrisers took advantage of the early dismissal, knocking Kings over for 120 and chasing down the target with nine wickets in hand and eight balls remaining.

Nevertheless, the short knock was enough to take Rahul to the milestone in his 143rd innings in the 20-over format.

He becomes the fastest player from his homeland to go past 5,000 runs, doing so in his 143rd knock, beating Virat Kohli who did it in 167 innings.

Rahul sits 70th in the all-time list, someway behind his countryman who lies in sixth on 9,802 runs.

Kohli is also the highest-scoring IPL batter in history, having struck 5,949 runs in 187 innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
