In a game where six CSK batters reached 20 but couldn't pass 25, spin played a major part as Capitals ultimately fell well short
Chennai: Chennai Super Kings 167-8, Delhi Capitals 140-8 - Chennai Super Kings win by 27 runs
Chennai Super Kings put together a clinical display with the ball and in the field as they strangled Delhi Capitals to beat them on home soil by 27 runs and continue their push towards the top of this season's Indian Premier League table.
They won a good toss on a surface that offered significant spin and cobbled together a score that ended up being more than enough to beat Ricky Ponting's side, who have struggled throughout this season.
Capitals' reply in a run-chase of 168 began as badly as it possibly could, with David Warner slapping the second ball of the innings into the hands of Ajinkya Rahane at cover to give Chennai the wicket they were craving.
And things went from bad to worse when Phil Salt, who had been hit in the ribs early in his innings before planting a six over midwicket, skewed a catch to mid-on.
Four balls later, Capitals' self-destruction continued, with Manish Pandey and Mitch Marsh finding themselves stranded mid-pitch, with Marsh miles out at the non-striker's end as Rahane ran with the ball from cover to take off the bails.

In a game where six CSK batters reached 20 but couldn't pass 25, spin played a major part as Capitals ultimately fell well short.
Pandey (27) and Rilee Rossouw (35) attempted to rebuild but neither could properly get going as Moeen Ali rolled through four overs for just 16 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja ending with 1 for 19 from his allocation.
Pandey was trapped in front by Matheesha Pathirana before Rossouw holed out off Jadeja as Delhi slipped to 89 for 5 and were unable to recover despite the best efforts of Axar Patel (21). Slingy fast bowler Pathirana closed out proceedings expertly.
Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad (24), Rahane (21), Shivam Dube (25), Ambati Rayudu (23), Jadeja (21) and MS Dhoni (20) all contributed as Chennai climbed to 167 for 8, which ultimately proved plenty.
