Sam Morshead: Cricket can learn from umpire mistake and allow officials to specialise in TV

Talking Points: Ridiculous Rohit and the sweet sound of supporters

England saw a lost review reinstated following an umpiring howler on day one of the second Test against India in Chennai.

The tourists were incensed after seeing their appeal to third umpire Anil Chaudhary rejected, despite Ajinkya Rahane looping a catch up to Ollie Pope at short leg.

Rahane's glove clipped the ball after it looped up off his front pad but Jack Leach was denied the wicket despite all the technology necessary being available to Chaudhary.

The official, who was excellent in his role as a standing umpire in the first Test, failed to run the footage through far enough to establish that the ball had touched Rahane's glove, much to England's frustration.

The visitors were initially docked their review, but it was later reinstated after TV coverage showed that Rahane should have been given out.

England's team operations manager Wayne Bentley contacted the match referee Javagal Srinath having seen the replays shown on the world feed, with Srinath agreeing that the review should be reapplied.

The Indian vice-captain did not benefit from the mistake, as he was dismissed six balls later by Moeen Ali.

Leach was also frustrated when Chaudhary gave Rohit Sharma not out on a stumping review, when the Indian opener did not appear to have any part of his boot grounded behind the line.

Rohit made 161 as India recovered from 86 for 3 to reach stumps in a comfortable position on a surface which has taken turn since the first half-hour of the match.
