Toyota Community Hero nominees:

John Downey – Hawk Green CC

John for many years was the club’s junior coordinator and did an amazing job. He then became a trustee at the club and coordinates groundwork and maintenance of the club and outbuildings. He is not just an organiser, he is hands-on, working in his spare time, making sure the club is presentable and clean.

John also is a very good mediator.  If there is a problem with anyone at the club, John will do his best to sort it. He loves the club and the club loves him.

Rhys Morgan – Pencoed CC

Following the demise of Pencoed Cricket Club due to financial problems around 2010, there was no cricket in the community.

Around 2018, Rhys took it upon himself to get cricket back up and running in Pencoed. He started by clearing the AstroTurf strip, then asked and cajoled others to get involved and help him.

After a year of friendlies during lockdown due to covid, the club re-entered the Aouth-East Wales cricket pyramid.

Pencoed CC is now thriving, having gained promotion in 3 successive seasons.

None of this would have happened without Rhys dedication, hard work and commitment to cricket in Pencoed.

Ben Hacker – Eastbourne CC

Ben has been passed the Forward Drive baton by his father Paul Hacker. Forward Drive is Eastbourne CC’s  free scheme for 4-11 year olds. We run Forward Drive for the whole community in and around Eastbourne. It runs from January to September inside and out. Without fail Ben is there investing his time in the future of the club, with humour, with intensity, and with kindness. It’s his mission to provide access to this wonderful game for all the young people. Ben structures the sessions so all can achieve. We’re so grateful to all of our volunteers but especially Ben.

Will Strauss – Morley CC

Will is a great ambassador for the game of cricket. He promotes the positive aspects of the game with all the junior team he coaches. Not only does he develop his players cricketing skills, which he does well, but he also develops their life skills by building a relationship with them based on trust and respect with his players and spends a lot of time developing their confidence and self-esteem.

He works tirelessly at the club organising coaching sessions and matches. He also organises community events such as rounders tournaments, community bonfires and Christmas activities and has been involved in successfully setting up girls’ and women’s cricket teams.

He is always calm, fair and approachable and his communication with parents is outstanding. He will go out of his way to help people if he can.
