Ruturaj Gaikwad has become the first player to hit seven sixes in an over in List A cricket, achieving the feat for Maharashtra in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

He is the second player to break batting records in this year's competition, following on from Tamil Nadu opener Narayan Jagadeesan, who last week smashed the highest score in List A history as his team broke the 500-run barrier for the first time.

In all, Gaikwad hit 43 runs in the penultimate over of his team's innings, depositing left-arm spinner Shiva Singh for sixes over long-off, long-on, deep square leg and deep midwicket, with the fifth delivery of the over a no-ball.

That isn't the first instance of 43 runs being scored in a single over; Brett Hampton and Joe Carter managed the same figure while batting together for Northern Districts in New Zealand's domestic competition in 2018.

Gaikwad, who has represented India 10 times in white-ball cricket, ended unbeaten on 220 – out of a total of 330 for 5 – as Maharashtra, whom he captains, overcame Uttar Pradesh by 58 runs. Aryan Juyal made 159 off 143 balls in response.

Jagadeesan, a 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, had smashed 277 off 141 deliveries, surpassing Ali Brown, the former Surrey and England batter who held the record for 20 years. Brown smashed 268 against Glamorgan in 2002, with Surrey falling narrowly shy of 500 on that occasion.

Jagadeesan needed just 114 balls to reach 200 – the same number as Travis Head last year for South Australia. They now jointly hold the record for the fastest double century.

Tamil Nadu, who won by 435 runs to create more history as the largest margin of victory in List A cricket, eventually posted 506 for 2. England came within two runs of breaching the 500-run barrier when they made 498 for 4 against the Netherlands in June.

Even as Gaekwad hit 7 consecutive sixes--he took 11 balls to score 50 runs for a shortest sequence. Earlier this year, Ben Stokes [FC] and Thisara Perera [ListA] have scored 50s in shortest sequences of 10 balls each.
