Tamil Nadu have become the first team to make 500 in a List A match, with opening batter Narayan Jagadeesan breaking a host of records in the process at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Jagadeesan, a 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, smashed 277 off 141 deliveries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture, the highest individual score in men's List A history, surpassing Ali Brown, the former Surrey and England batter who held the record for 20 years. Brown smashed 268 against Glamorgan in 2002, with Surrey falling narrowly shy of 500 on that occasion.

Jagadeesan needed just 114 balls to reach 200 – the same number as Travis Head last year for South Australia. They now jointly hold the record for the fastest double century.

Tamil Nadu, who won by 435 runs to create more history as the largest margin of victory in List A cricket, eventually posted 506 for 2. England came within two runs of breaching the 500-run barrier when they made 498 for 4 against the Netherlands in June.

Remarkably, Jagadeesan, who has now made five consecutive centuries after making 23 runs in his four previous innings, fell in the 42nd over, with eight still remaining and the first List A triple hundred in sight. His opening partner, Sai Sudharsan, made 154 off 102 balls and departed in the 39th over after an opening stand worth 416 runs.

Twin brothers Baba Aparajith and Baba Indrajith both ended 31 not out as Arunachal Pradesh dragged back the scoring rate in the last 10 overs. Chetan Anand, a 26-year-old leg-spinner, bowled 10 overs at a cost of 114 runs – the most conceded in a men's List A game, one more than former Australia seamer Mick Lewis.

He did dismiss Jagadeesan eventually, though it would be hard to argue that he had the last laugh.

In response, Arunachal Pradesh were rolled for 71 inside 29 overs.
