India v England: 3rd Test scorecard

India complete 10-wicket win in Ahmedabad

Two-day shambles and Axar better late than never ... TEST MATCH TALKING POINTS

INDIA

Rohit Sharma (66 & 25*): Made a pitch that outdid almost every other player look like a dream to bat on. His first-innings fifty was as good a knock as you'll see. 8

Shubman Gill (11 & 15*): Played perhaps the poorest shot of the match, going after a short one from Jofra Archer. He'll learn, but this has been a tough series. 3

Cheteshwar Pujara (0 & DNB): His curious series continues as Leach unseated him once again. Good catch to dismiss the leg-spinner but contributed nothing else. 1

Virat Kohli (27 & DNB): Got his selection spot on and kept the pressure on England throughout. Finished with India's second-highest score of the Test, but he'll be frustrated with the manner of it. 6

Ajinkya Rahane (7 & DNB): Since resuming vice-captaincy duties Rahane has struggled for traction. Not a lot he could do with dismissal. 2

Jonny Bairstow had a Test to forget

Rishabh Pant (1 & DNB): Went searching for a Root delivery that was too wide, and edged behind. Solid but not spectacular with the gloves. 4

Ravichandran Ashwin (17 & DNB; 3-26 & 4-48): Outbowled by Axar and wasn't altogether that threatening, but that didn't prevent him from going to 400 Test wickets or taking seven wickets. Just another day at the office. 7

Washington Sundar (0 & DNB; DNB & 1-1): Handed four deliveries at the end of England's second knock just to give him something to do. Was long enough for him to grab a fifth Test wicket. 4

Axar Patel (0 & DNB; 6-38 & 5-32): Deployed the arm ball to deadly effect throughout the match as England were continually trapped in front. His 18 wickets across two Tests begs the question of what may have happened if he's been fit for all three. 9

Ishant Sharma (10* & DNB; 1-26 & DNB): Not what he would have dreamed off while playing his 100th Test, but he did cap it off with the wicket of Dom Sibley and a first six. Another nice little landmark during this series. 5

Jasprit Bumrah (1 & DNB; 0-19 & DNB): Tough to mark given he only bowled six overs and batted once. Fully rested for the fourth Test, at least. 5

ENGLAND

Zak Crawley (53 & 0): The most assured of England's flummoxed batsmen. Played a free-flowing and joyous knock on his return to the side. Had no chance with either delivery. 7

Dom Sibley (0 & 7): Fended at a wide one first up and played a horrid swipe when more control was required in the third innings. Not his best match. 2

Jonny Bairstow (0 & 0): A second Test pair on his first appearance of the series. Didn't come forward enough to Patel before being given out twice - surviving thanks to DRS - in the second innings. Might do well to survive the chop. 1

Joe Root (17 & 19; 5-8 & 0-25): Fair to say the England captain got his selection wrong before the toss, and it set the tone. Grabbed a maiden five-for with the ball to drag the tourists back in but was left wanting with the bat. 6

Ben Stokes (6 & 25; 0-19 & DNB): Hasn't really contributed since the first innings in Chennai, looking rustier as the series has progressed. Dismissed by Ashwin for the 11th time in Tests. 3

Ollie Pope (1 & 12): Played two balls which he expected to turn, only to see his off-stump taken out. If he is to become the force we all expect, this will be a key learning experience. 3

Axar Patel now has 18 wickets in the series

Ben Foakes (12 & 8): Actually looked quite solid at times though he struggled to score against Ashwin and Patel. Took a great catch to dismiss Pant. 4

Jofra Archer (11 & 0; 1-24 & DNB): If Root had his time again, he may have held Archer back for this Test. Given just five overs with the ball and took one of two to fall to seam. Took two almighty heaves with the bat, which didn't come off. 4

Jack Leach (3 & 9; 4-54 & 0-15): Once again got in amongst India's middle-order, upsetting the Pujara-Kohli-Rahane axis. Since that mauling at the hands of Pant he's been England's most consistent performer. 7

Stuart Broad (3 & 1*; 0-16 & DNB): Another who might not play if selection could be done again. What movement there was under lights didn't come from him. And he'll regret those angry exchanges with the umpire. 3

James Anderson (0* & 0; 0-20 & DNB): The Lancastrian will be fresh for the fourth Test. And that's about it. 3
