India v England: 3rd Test scorecard

Ahmedabad: England 112 and 81 v India 145 & 49-0 - India won by 10 wickets

India completed a remarkable victory over a perplexed England in one of the shortest Tests in history in Ahmedabad.

In the 10th-lowest scoring and seventh shortest Test (balls delivered) to reach a result, the hosts completed victory in the pink-ball day-night match shortly after tea on day two.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill knocked off the 49 required to claim victory by 10 wickets and go 2-1 up in the series.

The result means England can no longer qualify for the World Test Championship final.

Virat Kohli's men meanwhile know they will join New Zealand at Lord's if they avoid defeat when both sides reconvene in Ahmedabad next week.

Axar Patel claimed 11 wickets

In a match dominated by the spinners, Axar Patel took a career-best 11-70 while Ravichandran Ashwin went to 400 Test scalps thanks to figures of 7-74.

As with the second Test in Chennai, England were on the back foot from the outset. Joe Root won the toss but it was a rare positive on the opening afternoon.

The tourists went on to record their lowest first innings score in India, being bowled out for 112.

Zak Crawley produced a fine knock of 53 with some sumptuous drives but he lacked support as India made continual inroads with the SG ball.

India capped off a fine opening day as they reached the close on 99 for 3, with Sharma having typically found a way of mastering the conditions.

Hopes of opening up a handsome lead were buried by an England counterattack on day two on a surface that was becoming increasingly treacherous to bat on.

Jack Leach claimed four wickets and there was a maiden five-for for Joe Root, the first England captain to take such a haul since Bob Willis in 1983.

Trailing by 33 after both sides had batted once, no sooner had England clawed their way back into the contest they were right back in crisis mode.

Crawley and Jonny Bairstow - who recorded his second Test pair - were dismissed inside the first three balls of the third innings by Patel and from that moment India were never pegged back.

England collapsed to 81 all out, their lowest total in Asia, giving India just 49 to win the Test.

And either side of the evening interval the home side cruised home, with victory secured thanks to Sharma's crushing six over mid-wicket.
