Jonny Bairstow could be doubtful for the start of England's T20I series against South Africa after he limped away from training on Tuesday.

The England batter, who last week reiterated his desire to continue playing all three formats of international cricket for "as long as possible", was caught on camera heading back to the dressing rooms at Bristol with an ice pack on his knee.

He was described as having "limited participation in practice" a day out from the opening T20I of the three-match series, which follows on from the ODI contest between the sides, which ended as a draw after a washout at Headingley on Sunday.

Bairstow hasn't played T20 cricket for England since the semi-final of last year's World Cup, when Eoin Morgan's team were beaten by New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

He opened the batting then, with Jason Roy absent through a calf injury, but the Yorkshireman would likely return to the middle order against the Proteas.

Bairstow's only T20 cricket since then has come in the Indian Premier League, where he represented Punjab Kings this season.
