Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the 2021 Indian Premier League to support his family in their fight against Covid-19.
India is currently experiencing a huge spike in coronavirus cases, announcing over 350,000 new infections and nearly 3,000 deaths in the past 24 hours.
The Delhi Capitals allrounder is one of several players to leave the tournament over the past week, alongside Liam Livingstone, Andrew Tye (both Rajasthan Royals), and RCB bowlers Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson.
However, unlike his fellow departees, Ashwin is open to returning to IPL action if his situation allows.
In a statement on Twitter, Ashwin said: "I would be taking a break from this year’s IPL from tomorrow [April 26]. My family and extended family are putting up a fight against Covid-19 and I want to support them during these tough times.
"I expect to return to play if things go in the right direction. Thank you."
