Moeen Ali returns to Warwickshire on white-ball contract

GEORGE DOBELL: The England allrounder departs Worcestershire after 16 seasons at New Road in a deal that includes a pay-as-you-play red-ball element

Moeen Ali has agreed a three-year deal to rejoin Warwickshire.

The England limited-overs allrounder, who developed through the youth teams at the club, joined local rivals Worcestershire at the end of 2006.

The 35-year-old had been the subject of interest from Lancashire, Surrey and Yorkshire, with the latter understood to have offered a particularly lucrative deal.

It appears, however, he has decided to rejoin the club where he made his first-class debut in 2005.

He has continued to live in Birmingham and his father, Munir, operates an academy at Edgbaston. It is understood his deal at Warwickshire will cover white-ball cricket only with a pay-as-you-play red-ball element.

Moeen announced his retirement from Test cricket at the end of the 2021 summer and has not played a first-class game since.

He recently admitted he would like to be considered for selection for England's Test tour of Pakistan, but it remains unclear if he will play any first-class cricket before the end of the season.

The news comes just days after Warwickshire announced the signing of another Worcestershire allrounder, Ed Barnard.

Warwickshire are expecting less positive news over their attempts to sign Saqib Mahmood. The Lancashire fast bowler, who has long been a target of the club, is expected to stay at Old Trafford.
