Glamorgan return to single head coach model after experimenting with split roles

Matt Maynard, Mark Alleyne and David Harrison all ended up as head coach in different formats during the 2023 campaign

Glamorgan are set to return to a single head coach model for 2024, a year after carving the role between red-ball and limited-over cricket.

But much has changed since then, with Matthew Maynard – who was understood to be frustrated by the split in the first place – having stepped down from his post with the County Championship side at the end of the summer.

Mark Alleyne, the former Gloucestershire captain and head coach, was hired to the white-ball role, but that is a tricky balancing act in the context of today's calendar.

He led Glamorgan in the T20 Blast, but they finished second-bottom of the South Group, and Alleyne was seconded to Welsh Fire for The Hundred, which meant David Harrison – who led the county to the One-Day Cup title in 2021 – was once again in charge of the 50-over team. Inadvertently, they ended up with different head coaches for all three domestic tournaments.

Alleyne is set to remain on the coaching staff.

"There were some positive elements with the split coaching model, and both Matthew and Mark embraced it and managed their areas well," said Mark Wallace, Glamorgan's director of cricket.

He also recognised that the state of play made such a structure difficult.

"With the hectic nature of the schedule and the need for players to switch across formats, we've decided to move back to a more traditional structure moving forward," added Wallace.

"The job is now being advertised and we are looking for the right candidate for this exciting role to be in place early in the new year."

Glamorgan's decision-making has come under pressure from former players, including Simon Jones and Tom Cullen – the latter of whom accused the county of "cronyism" in the appointments of former players to senior positions.
