Trent Bridge (day two of four): Sussex 169 & 195-7, Nottinghamshire 300 - Sussex lead by 64 runs with three first-innings wickets remaining

Sussex will need a supreme effort to avoid a three-day defeat as Division One leaders Nottinghamshire look to complete a second win in four matches in a strong start to the County Championship season.

Last season's Division Two champions came into this match level on points with the Trent Bridge side, but at 195 for 7 in their second innings ended a day of fluctuating fortunes with a lead of just 64.

Nottinghamshire led by 131 on first innings, having slipped from 164 for 3 overnight to 210 for 8 before Liam Patterson-White (42) and Josh Tongue (39 not out) helped them recover to 300 all out after skipper Haseeb Hameed's fine 85 earlier. Ollie Robinson and Jayden Seales led the Sussex bowling with four wickets each, with England’s Robinson the pick of the two.

Sussex reached 89 without loss in their second innings before a collapse saw them lose five wickets for 36 runs. Tom Haines made 64, but until skipper John Simpson (35 not out) put up late resistance, it was a batting effort from the south coast side to match their disappointing showing in the first innings. Australian Fergus O'Neill, whose four-match stint with Nottinghamshire ends with this match, has 3 for 60.

Kia Oval (day two of four): Somerset 283, Surrey 321-7- Surrey are 38 runs ahead with three first-innings wickets remaining

Rory Burns was one of three Surrey half-centurions as the defending champions took a first innings lead against visitors Somerset on day two at the Kia Oval.

The Brown Caps skipper struck 10 boundaries in a fluent 76, sharing a first-wicket stand of 129 with fellow former England opener Dominic Sibley (53), who passed 50 for the fifth time in six innings this season.

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was the third to reach his half-century with 58 as the hosts reached 321 for 7 at stumps.

Somerset's bowlers recovered from a morning where they bowled too full a length, skipper Lewis Gregory leading the way with 3 for 46, including a double strike with the second new ball, as four wickets fell in the final session.

New Road (day two of four)Worcestershire 162 & 81, Durham 136 & 108-4 - Durham won by six wickets

Durham beat Worcestershire by six wickets inside two days in a bowler-dominated County Championship match at New Road.

After 16 wickets fell on the first day, 14 fell in the first two sessions of the second on a pitch which the seamers would like to carry round in their kit bag.

Durham trailed by 26 on first innings after they were bowled out for 136 (Ben Allison 3 for 26, Tom Taylor 3 for 36) but George Drissell's resolute 31 (63 balls) proved priceless as Worcestershire were skittled for 81 in the afternoon session.

A Ben Raine blitz left the home side 3 for 3, and they never recovered, Raine ending with 4 for 20 and Codi Yusuf 4 for 26. Durham faced a victory target of 107, no formality on such a bowler-friendly pitch, but reached 108 for 4, thanks principally to Ben McKinney's 34 from 58 balls.
