County Championship Division Two roundup: Shan Masood rescues Yorkshire as England duo falter

The Cricketer wraps up the best of the action during day one of round two of the Vitality County Championship in 2024

Cardiff (day one of four): Glamorgan 237, Derbyshire 46-1 - Derbyshire trail by 191 runs with nine first-innings wickets in hand

A career-best bowling performance from Alex Thomson led the way for Derbyshire on the first day of their Vitality County Championship match against Glamorgan.

Glamorgan managed 237 all out as Thomson claimed seven wickets to justify Derbyshire's decision to put the hosts into bat on a sunny day in Cardiff.

Glamorgan's top scorer was Kiran Carlson who made 74 but regular wickets throughout the day meant that the highest partnership that the home side managed was 60.

Derbyshire faced 16 overs before the close to finish on 46 for 1 with Luis Reece the one man to go. It will be Derbyshire who are the happier of the two sides but there is enough in this pitch to suggest that this could be a tight contest.

Bristol (day one of four): Yorkshire 326, Gloucestershire 28-2 - Gloucestershire trail by 298 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand

Skipper Shan Masood's 26th first-class century rescued Yorkshire on the opening day of the County Championship Division Two match with Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.

The visitors plunged to 90 for 5 in the first session, losing England's Joe Root and Harry Brook for 28 runs between them in the process. But the Pakistan Test captain stood firm and moved flawlessly to this third Yorkshire hundred off 140 balls, with 15 fours.

Masood was finally dismissed for 140 but with Jonny Tattersall contributing a brisk 56 and Matt Milnes 51, Yorkshire posted 326 all out after losing the toss, Zaman Akhter claiming a career-best 5 for 85 from 18.3 overs.

By the close, Gloucestershire had slipped to 28 for 2 in reply.

Leicester (day one of four): Leicestershire 326-8, Sussex

Having lost the toss, Leicestershire will be the more satisfied with the position of the match after finishing on 326 for 8 on day one of their Division Two match against Sussex in the County Championship.

Three Leicestershire batters made half-centuries, with 2023 red-ball player of the year Rishi Patel hitting 12 fours and two sixes in a fluid 87. Australia's Peter Handscomb contributed a steady 51 while allrounder Liam Trevaskis is 82 not out on his Leicestershire debut.

Sussex had the home side 63 for 3 midway through the morning session on a green-tinged pitch but were not able to press home their advantage.

They used eight different bowlers, although not their England quick Ollie Robinson, who is being rested for this round. Fynn Hudson-Prentice (3 for 50) was the pick of them.

Northampton (day one of four): Northamptonshire 311-3, Middlesex

Opener Emilio Gay struck a stylish, commanding 165 not out, the fifth first-class century of his career, as Northamptonshire took full advantage of being put into bat against Middlesex.

The hosts finished in a dominant position on 311 for 3 on day one of this County Championship match at Wantage Road.

Gay, 24 on Sunday, celebrated his birthday early, striking his highest first-class score off 272 balls with 17 boundaries.

He found a supportive partner in his skipper Luke Procter who hit 73 in a 189-run stand in 65.2 overs, eclipsing Northamptonshire's previous highest second-wicket partnership against Middlesex (179) set by Stephen Peters and Alex Wakely in 2010.
