Joe Root is in line to make his first County Championship appearance for nearly two years after being named in Yorkshire's 13-strong squad to face Gloucestershire in Bristol.

The former England captain has made himself available for five of Yorkshire's first seven red-ball matches.

He comes into the squad in place of James Wharton.

Root hasn't played for Yorkshire in any format since May 29, 2022, while his most recent red-ball outing for his county came earlier that month. Donning the white rose against Warwickshire, he was dismissed for 8 (19) in a drawn match at Edgbaston.

Over the course of his career, Root has made 55 first-class appearances for Yorkshire, scoring 3,644 runs at 44.98 and taking 18 wickets.

His return means Yorkshire's top five could include no fewer than four internationally capped batters, with Adam Lyth, Shan Masood and Harry Brook also in the squad.

Brook made his Yorkshire return in last week’s season opener against Leicestershire, blasting an unbeaten century off 69 deliveries.
