Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has been fined 12 lakh (£11,713) following his side's slow over-rate in the eight-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals in Mumbai.

The three-time winners crashed to defeat in their opening game at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday (April 10).

And the loss has been compounded by a reprimand for Dhoni for breaching rules regarding over-rates.

Indian Premier League rules state that the fielding team should deliver 14.11 overs per hour during a typical game.

The 20th over of the innings must also start within one hour and 30 minutes of the start of play.

Umpires take into account any stoppages such as players requirement treatment to an injury, third umpire referrals, delays forced by the fall of wickets, time-wasting by the batting side and any other circumstances deemed to be beyond the control of the bowling side when calculating the over-rate.

An IPL statement said: "Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 10.

"As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh."
